In memory of Raquel Liberman and
Humberto “Cacho” CostantiniThe story we tell takes place throughout the so-called ‘Infamous Decade’ of the 1930’s, in the city of Buenos Aires. The capital of Argentina was open to all innovations, trades, languages and cultures brought by the immigrants. One of these was Raquel Liberman. Raquel travelled from her hometown of Lodz in Poland with her two children to reunite with her husband. She soon became a widow and was captured by the “Zwi Migdal”, an organization which enslaved and trafficked Polish women. We were deeply moved by her story, her courage and integrity in confronting “La Migdal”, thereby changing her fate and that of so many others, as is so beautifully depicted in Cacho Costantini’s poem “Milonga of a woman”. With Yiddish and Tango in the air, we meet the main characters of a same story: the one told by boats, exiles, poverty, illusions of progress: The dream of a life. It is the songs themselves, through their unique poetry, that reveal these lives to us.
This album was born out of a music show performed on various occasions at the Instituto Judío de Investigaciones (Jewish Research Institute), the IWO Foundation, AMIA, and the Woman’s Museum in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Sharing this creation enriched us deeply, as women and artists, and it is our contribution to the never ending battle against all discrimination and gender violence.
